Creating a Tobacco-free Environment
Complete healthcare involves strong leadership and an unwavering commitment to creating the healthiest environment possible. As a part of its mission to provide a safe and healthy community, Butler Health System is becoming tobacco free. Starting September 2, 2008, the use of tobacco products will no longer be permitted on BHS campuses, sites and properties. This new policy will eliminate the risks of second-hand smoke and keep BHS facilities clean and safe for patients, visitors and employees.
Dangers of Tobacco Use
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports tobacco use as the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. An estimated 438,000 Americans die every year from smoking or from exposure to second-hand smoke. And, for each person who dies from tobacco use or exposure, about 20 more are living with a smoking-related illness. Tobacco use is dangerous and deadly, and it should have no place in the healthcare community. BHS is working to eliminate the negative effects of smoking by becoming tobacco free.
If you have questions about the BHS tobacco free initiative, please call the Tobacco Free Hotline at 724-431-2910 or ext. 2910 from within the hospital.
